National Parks and Wildlife Service Education Centres aim to raise awareness of the natural world and the importance of conserving and protecting our biodiversity.
Clara Bog Visitor Centre offers FREE educational visits to the NPWS Nature Reserve of Clara Bog
Primary School Programme
A day at Clara Bog Visitor Centre and Boardwalk focuses on the many aspects of the Social Environmental Scientific Education subjects of Science, Geography and History for students in a fun, interactive and hands-on manner. This is also an ideal opportunity for schools participating in Green-Schools and Discovery Primary Science and Maths Award of Excellence. We are a Science Foundation Ireland Discover Centre and provide investigative workshops for primary school pupils.
Post Primary School Programme
A day at Clara Bog Visitor Centre and Boardwalk focuses on many aspects of the post-primary curriculum for students in a fun, interactive and hands-on manner. This is an ideal opportunity for students at both junior and senior cycle to consider how the past, present and future uses of peatlands have and can effect their lives. At junior cycle a visit can reinforce learning in the subjects of Geography, E.S.S., History, Science, Art, Craft and Design, and C.S.P.E as well as perhaps being an element of a short course. At senior cycle a visit can reinforce learning in the subjects of Geography, History, Art, Biology, and Agricultural Science. There is also the possibility of working with Education Officers to deliver a short course for TYs.
A typical visit would include preparing students to complete a field study of the site. All equipment is provided. Education Officers will tailor the visit to reflect specific aspects of the relevant syllabus that students are covering while making links to other curricula areas that are relevant.
